  1. A judicial procedure by which government
  2. officials are accused of wrongdoing and
  3. brought to trial before a legislative body.
  4. In the USA the House of Representatives may
  5. impeach offenders to be tried before the
  6. Senate, as in the case of President Andrew
  7. Johnson 1868. Richard Nixon was forced to
  8. resign the US presidency 1974 following the
  9. threat of impeachment. In England the House
  10. of Commons from 1376 brought ministers and
  11. officers of state to trial before the House
  12. of Lords, for example Bacon 1621, Strafford
  13. 1640, and Warren Hastings 1788.
  14.
